The Church released this statement today regarding President Monson, who will no longer be attending regular meetings. All major decisions will be made by him as he is able to do so. Everything else will be delegated to the other 14 apostles, most of whom are able to carry on the work.
I have provided a full analysis of this news with this post on my blog. More coming as more is known. I would just add that the Church is in secure hands. There have been provisions for years in Church policy for if and when a president cannot actively function fully, and that procedure is being followed.
The Church has gone this route several times before, most recently with Presidents Kimball and Benson. During a time when President Hinckley was the only functioning member of the First Presidency, he gave this talk covering what was being done in that situation. His words, as we know, were prophetic, as he, along with President Monson, led the Church during the time when President Benson was incapacitated.
President Hinckley went on to be Church President himself following President Hunter's brief administration. And now we are seeing a time when President Monson cannot fully function as Church President. But the Church is, as it always is, in good hands. No need to fear or worry.
In the coming days, more will be known about what this means for President Monson and for the Church. In the meantime, let us unite in prayer in behalf of him and the other 14 apostles.
I will use this thread to post updates on the situation as more is known. Thanks to you all.
